This is the history of Bike North
Significant Events
Proto Bike North
Members who were to form Bike North met at a Bicycle NSW Advocacy Workshop in 1996. They were keen to improve cycling in their areas and realised that there was no BUG in Northern Sydney and yet there was some bicycle plans in place and action under way.
Initial Meeting
Following word of mouth and “flyer on bike” promotion about 16 people met in a private house to form Bike North. At the first meeting the name, Bike North, was agreed after discussion about the vision for the future where we wanted to operate without limiting activities in any way. Also the first Executive committee was elected and the first rides program was created by members adding their regular rides to make up the program.
Initial Campaign – Cycleway along Northern Sydney Railway Line Maintenance Tracks
With keen enthusiasm, especially from Sue Saczko, we developed a campaign to request that the maintenance tracks along the railway lines be turned into dedicated cycleways. And not just cycleways but high speed veloways. With wide tracks, continuous riding over bridges avoiding all intersections and good grades bike travel times in northern Sydney would easily rival all other types of transport.
We took this campaign to local councils, state government and federal government. We wrote reports, organised petitions and a postcard mail-in. Despite difficulty in engaging anyone in the concept we kept going for a long time. The section of the path between Denistone and Eastwood Stations became a prototype, albeit not built to the correct standard and only being short.
Eventually several sections of path along the railway were included in the Bike Plan 2010 released by the NSW government as a 10 year plan in 1999. The next path to become a prototype was the Parramatta to Liverpool “rail-trail” which Bike North became involved in particularly to ensure best quality outcomes to act as important precedents.
Unfortunately after quite few years of intense effort the concept was simply too advanced for the political situation at the time. By then Bike North was struggling with State and Local Government on much much smaller projects including short sections of path. We agreed to leave the large project in abeyance and return at a later date when the idea would be acceptable.
