Fit, experienced riders only. | Full Description | This ride is a long hard ride with long hills. We travel via Browns Waterhole, Turramurra, Bobbin Hd, Mt Colah, Cowan then to Brooklyn for a light snack at the Hawkesbury River Marina. Returns via Cowan, Hornsby, Turramurra and Browns Waterhole. Some leaders may have a break at Pie in the Sky instead of Brooklyn.
The ride travels on roads with medium levels of traffic many of which are single lane so you need to be confident about riding close to cars. We have three long hills which we tackle at between 15 and 18 km/hr. Along with faster descents and some flat sections the average speed is expected to be brisk (23-25 km/hr). Between Mt Colah and Pie in the Sky (both directions) we will travel in a group (peloton) where those in the back will get a chance to shelter from the wind. You must be confident in riding close to other riders for these sections. We regroup a few times on the ride and prefer to keep the group compact and rolling. We do however regroup at the top of the three major climbs (Kissing Pt Rd), Mt Colah and Pie in the Sky, we wait until everyone is together before heading off again. This should definitely NOT be your first ride with Bike North, unless you know the terrain and have recently ridden this or a similar route at about the same speed. It is strongly recommended you do a series of rides which build up your fitness, skills and strength. Try some medium and then medium-hard rides before coming on this one. If you have not ridden with the ride leader before you MUST call and discuss your background to determine suitability for this ride. For this ride you need to be completely self sufficient in minor repairs and carry two water bottles and small snacks. A mountain bike will not be suitable and you should have a road bike, light touring bike or flat bar road bike. The bike must be in good mechanical condition. The ride has several options for leaving part way. From Mt Colah to Brooklyn and then back to Hornsby we follow the main north railway line. |
