Short DescriptionFollow bike paths from the city to Epping. Generally, quiet, commuting friendly options
Full DescriptionEver been tempted to commute to work by bike, but were unsure of the way or wanted someone to guide you or to pickup some handy commuting skills? Here's your chance; we follow well used commuting routes from the city, with more than half our ride off-road on bike paths. Options for pickups en-route. There are also a few bail out options at train stations along the way for those who may have second thoughts.

From the start of the Harbour Bridge cycleway, we cross the bridge, descend the 48 steps and ride through Milsons Point. We ride up the highway for a bit as a group, taking the lane, then through North Sydney. At Naremburn we pick up the Gore Hill cycle path and follow this through Lane Cove to North Ryde. We then follow the M2 detour through relatively quiet streets of Marsfield and on to Epping.

Note that riders should be confident riding on-road, as there are some busy pinch points. There are also some short hills, so riders should also be comfortable with these. Dress for the likely conditions both on the way in and for the way home, including for potential inclement weather. Front and rear lights are recommended in case light is an issue. Contact the ride leader if in doubt what to bring, etc.

A few "rules" for commuting:
1. This is not a race; safety is the top priority
2. Respect other cycle path users and road users, especially the ones bigger than you
3. Obey the road rules
4. Be courteous, acknowledge courteous drivers. Don't ride angry if they do something wrong, and don't make them angry. Angry drivers can be dangerous!
5. Ride confidently and signal your intentions
6. Don't ride in the gutter. Take the lane on roundabouts and where it is safer to do so, otherwise some drivers will squeeze you out. Don't ride in the door zone unless you're sure it is safe. Filter only if you have time and a safe space to get to
7. Be seen. Wear bright clothing and use lights in low light. Also position yourself on the road where drivers can see you
8. Anticipate possible problems. Look at a drivers eyes if you think they haven't seen you
9. A bad bike commute is better than a good commute by car or public transport
