I rode a bike in my childhood but never saw the light again until 2007. Prior to that one of my favourite pursuits was camping in national parks and fishing isolated beaches. To cover more beach in search of the elusive beach worms for bait I acquired an old clunker MTB to ride the hard packed sand at low tide. Quickly I discovered riding with the wind on an open beach has its advantages, particularly when a strong southerly is blowing. I also discovered that invariably there is a bush track running parallel to the shoreline on most beaches within the parks such that you can ride against the wind in the more sheltered bushland, and return with the wind on the open beach. It didn't take long until I was searching out the fire trails away from the shoreline and bush riding soon became the preference, fishing taking second place. Bush riding led to the road, Bike North, and now I enjoy both cycling experiences.
Hence, my preferred BN rides will often entail bush routes, quiet country back roads, beach or bay rides, and MTB trails. I ride a MT200R Ironhorse mountain bike, and a BMC Streetfire road bike, the latter purchased in mid 2009. I might mention six months after I bought the BMC Cadel Evans signed with the BMC racing team. I wonder!! Seriously, whilst my rides may not quite reach Cadel's standards, they will seek to encourage riders to improve their skills, enjoy a variety of Bike North rides, and participate in the camaraderie of social riding. |
